ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the professional resettlement of returning migrants in the 1970s to Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the region occupying the north-eastern corner of Italy, and how this contributed to local development. It gives a brief account of the circumstances surrounding return migration to Friuli-Venezia Giulia. The chapter analyzes the changes in the local industrial labour demand that give the economic framework within which migration and return took place. A few industrial initiatives, mainly in the textile, mechanical and food industries, were spatially concentrated around the capitals of the four provinces (Trieste, Gorizia, Udine and Pordenone) that belong to the region. The chapter provides an analysis of the professional careers of returned migrants and how this affected their occupational resettlement. After the Second World War, Friuli-Venezia Giulia represented a marginal area in the Italian economy. Since 1970 the Friulian regional authorities have offered grants to returning migrants.
