ABSTRACT

The chapter explores the nature of gospel rappers' religious identity and their understanding of resistance in an attempt to differentiate between the traditionally held notion of activism and the political resistance characteristic of subcultural theory. It discusses the Whoz Meech's who desire in this rap is, like so many other gospel rappers, to wrestle free of such ontologies and to provide new life and meaning for himself and his listening audience. The chapter observes after the interactions with rappers, how these kinds of open forums work to not only articulate rappers' beliefs but also to assist them in resisting what they see as the culture of the world and the church. The gospel rappers' attempts to build support for their critiques of secular and sacred cultures do not only occur through videos posted on YouTube. Gospel rappers represented an excellent paradigm for the research.
