ABSTRACT

Residential treatment centers may be private nonprofits as well, but may be for profit companies. Generally they are insurance funded, although some may be private pay. The certification of choice for this setting is often a Certified Addictions Professional designation, as well as a Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) degree and possible licensure. MFTs will work as a treatment team in the residential program setting. Such settings can provide a feeling of intense camaraderie, and idyllic working conditions. However, it can be very frustrating to work with clients who often relapse. Self-care is important. Specialized training and credentials such as Certified Addictions Professional, in addition to family therapy training, may be useful. It is important to become prepared for this type of work internship sites and specific experiences relevant to residential treatment center settings are vital. Strategic therapy is utilized to help the client see their addiction in a new light, as the disease of addiction is one of denial.
