ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews two cases where significant mistakes were made. The first case is Miguel, an 18-year-old who had migrated to the US with his family from El Salvador when he was 12, was accused of the murder of a 34-year-old man in a local park. The victim was tied up and he had been stabbed 60 times to death. Then the second one is about a 52-year-old landlady, Marian was sentenced to 6 years imprisonment and mandated treatment on behalf of the state, in November 1998. The chapter explains the above cases mainly on the results from the MMPI-2 and the Rorschach Inkblot Method (RIM), since these two tests in consort provide the most relevant information regarding a possible psychotic disorder. It concludes the consequences of a lack of competence in the use of psychological tests and the failure to consider rival hypotheses by the help of above two cases.
