ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the relationship between Jordan's dire energy situation and the country's economic performance and prospects by addressing three main questions: What are the sources and severity of Jordan's energy insecurity? How have Jordan's energy-related problems undermined economic progress and, as a consequence, placed the country's very stability at risk? What steps have Jordanian authorities taken in order to extricate the country from its energy predicament and unleash its economic potential? Jordan's heavy dependence on ever-increasing volumes of energy imports has resulted in acute vulnerability to supply disruptions. In fact, Jordan was then, and remains, a country struggling to overcome acute energy insecurity. In the face of the country's chronic energy insecurity, Jordanian authorities cannot justifiably be accused of inertia. In the meantime, Jordan will have to struggle to manage energy insecurity by seeking to mitigate the risks and costs associated with it.
