This chapter draws on 549 hours of participant observation in one particular learning environment at Northern Beaches Christian School (NBCS), called the Zone; home to 180 Year 5 and Year 6 students and their team of seven teachers. At NBCS they carefully consider how things and people shape both learning and the learning environment. More recently Goodyear and Carvalho have described the movement of people, objects, or messages as fundamental to networking. In examining how elements come together in ways that influence learning in networks Goodyear and Carvalho have identified three central components, namely the structures of place, task and social organization. The chapter describes the epistemic, social, and set design of the Zone before presenting a rich description of one particular moment of learning activity. The Zone's digital learning environment was housed in Primary Education Through eLearning (PETE); a Moodle based learning management system.
