This chapter is excerpted from the book Whitewashing Race: The Myth of a Color-Blind Society. The book was originally published in 2003, and yet it remains relevant today. The authors explain how years of economic and social isolation limits opportunity by race. Over the years, they show, this disinvestment compounds. We have updated statistics and removed some dated language from the original text.
