ABSTRACT

With less time to report and tell stories, how can journalists immerse themselves in the challenging realm of racial inequity? It’s easy to be overwhelmed by the immensity and complexity of the subject. In this chapter the authors introduce a metaphor and framework that makes reporting about inequity easier to understand and approach. By adopting analytical models used in the field of public health, reporters can follow important lines of inquiry that reveal the structural roots of disparity. The authors call it upstream reporting.
