ABSTRACT

Most towns and cities have their own distinctive character and identity which distinguish one place from another. Spatial qualities of natural features and the built environment are what give places their special identity. Both the functional and symbolic qualities of place are the result of socio-cultural, economic and political processes and are crucial for the evolution and fostering of ‘place-identity’ (Dobbins, 2009; Butina Watson and Bentley, 2007).
