ABSTRACT

This book poses challenges to two distinctly different groups of professionals. For humanitarians, who are all about disasters (and have the acronyms to prove it), awareness and engagement are not the issues. Instead, this book commends to them that, because future disasters will be lodged increasingly in an urban context, existing models of disaster response tied to rural conditions will not suffice, new paradigms such as resilience may engender superior responses, and enduring partnerships with a wider range of professionals, including urban planners and designers, will be essential.
