ABSTRACT

Campus rape is a serious problem across the United States, and it's worth wondering what makes the Ivy League different in terms of addressing serious problems of sexual abuse between students. Ivy League leadership on the issue of sexual assault is largely due to the resources these schools can marshal in the service of student support and less about the inherent superiority of any of their own prevention or harm reduction approaches. After a recent rash of high-profile rapes resulting in criminal convictions, Harvard was beginning a year-long process of examining its culture and reporting mechanisms related to sexual assault. Many are quick to criticize colleges and universities, especially those with everything at stake in terms of their reputation and public image, for taking on cases of rape and sexual assault internally, through their own college judicial systems. All indications are that rape and other forms of sexual violence are alive and kicking at colleges across the country.
