ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the numbers or statistics, and develops an ethical commitment to compliance with the Clery Act. It examines the elements of the Clery Act and its impact on sexual violence prevention, response, and policy. The chapter includes the elements of the Clery Act, and its intersection with Title IX. Many campus administrators define Clery requirements as simply collecting and publishing crime statistics The Clery center for security on campus, in partnership with multiple nonprofit, victim service organizations, advocated for the violence against women act (VAWA) amendments to the Clery Act, informally known as the campus sexual violence elimination act. Numerous media and professional sources have suggested that campuses continue to underreport crime in spite of the Clery Act because of jurisdictional confusion, organizational inefficiency, and concern with student confidentiality. Many institutions have a program or person charged with the prevention and response of sexual assault.
