ABSTRACT

The analyses of different legal aspects of the complex concept of sustainable development will be valuable, in particular, for those devising national strategies for implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UN Declaration views SDGs as integrated and indivisible, and as aimed to balance three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental. One of the chapters in this book analyses existing World Trade Organization (WTO) rules relevant for natural resources management and the relationship between those rules and the principle of sustainable development. Other chapters deal with the impact of state-owned oil companies (North-South) and (South-South) on investments, and arbitration and natural resource protection. The considerable body of juristic writings recognises the multifaceted character of the concept of sustainable development. The challenge of change which societies face in different stages of development has needed a framework which would identify and elucidate the different facets of sustainable development.
