ABSTRACT

Few artists can have received more praise and critical attention than Vincent van Gogh. The aim of this chapter is to bring a psychological perspective to some of the roots of van Gogh’s creative genius. In particular, there will be an emphasis on the importance of his mother in his life and how his complex and often painful relationship with her was a potent influence on his art and writing. It is hoped that through understanding van Gogh more deeply there will be a greater appreciation of his artistic talent, his strength of character and his passionate determination to win his mother’s love.
