ABSTRACT
This chapter illuminates paradox through the microcosm of three non government organization (NGO) the International Rescue Committee (IRC), Women for Women International (WfWI) and Malteser International-all addressing gender-based violence (GBV) in the Kivu provinces on the Democratic Republic of the Congos (DRC) eastern flank. The chapter explains the political aspects of the networks in which humanitarian NGOs engage and what it means in terms of instrumentalization and inadvertent consequences of humanitarian action and it indicates how to understand NGO instrumentalization and inadvertent consequences theoretically. Although the more historical, ethical and anthropological literature has helped structure the debate on humanitarianism, it has penetrated to the heart of the paradox to explain the humanitarian agencies. The chapter explores several analytical approaches that get at the heart of the paradox of humanitarian action in the eastern DRC and also it helped to build the capacity of partner organizations.
