ABSTRACT

The distinguishing feature of deep ecology is that it rejects the idea of moral ranking in which it is held that humans have higher moral value than non-human objects. Deforestation is one of the major environmental challenges facing the world today. The problem with controlling deforestation is that most of the world's forests lie within the territories of countries and as such are considered as sovereign or national resources. While the developed countries nudge governments of developing countries towards dealing with the problem, developing countries' governments often complain that they have neither the capacity to monitor vast areas of forest, nor alternative resources to fall back on if deforestation is discontinued. The main cause of desertification is human activities, although these are sometimes facilitated by variation in climatic conditions. Desertification is a serious environmental problem as it affects the lives of over 250m. The main impact of desertification is habitat loss, and with it the loss of valuable biodiversity.
