ABSTRACT

One of the most influential environmental pressure groups in the world, Friends of the Earth (FoE) is also one of the most extensive environmental networks. The organization is highly decentralized, with most of the member groups retaining huge autonomy over their campaign focuses, strategy and budget. A biannual general meeting elects an executive committee, which oversees the co-ordination of the activities of member organizations. FoE’s international secretariat is located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. FoE has been very active in campaigning against the construction of new nuclear power stations in Europe and in establishing safety levels for existing nuclear facilities. The organization has also been influential in its campaigns in the areas of air, sea and land pollution, acid rain, and climate change.
