ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the use of Relapse Prevention strategies and outlines ways of adapting this approach for use with people who are difficult to engage in services. Psychotic relapse can be defined as the recurrence of clinically significant and sustained positive symptoms that follow a period of remission. Relapse can result in hospitalization. It has been known for some time that psychotic relapse is preceded by subtle changes in people thoughts and behavior. People with lived experience of using mental health services have developed a Relapse Prevention tool known as the Wellness Recovery Action Plan. This emphasizes wellness rather than focusing on relapse and talks about having a wellness toolbox which includes strategies for maintaining mental health. The Relapse Prevention work has helped to take more control over his mental health. Good quality Relapse Prevention training from a clinician experienced in Relapse Prevention using a structured approach ensures that all team members are able to utilize and support this work.
