ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the therapeutic benefits of single sessions and brief interventions for people with psychosis who are hard to engage are explored. The aim of intervention is to become inquisitive about the person and to create an environment where the person feels comfortable to share their experiences and their understanding about themselves, based upon their life experience. Paul was 30 years old at the time of brief intervention. He was troubled by psychotic experiences for many years and had rejected all previous attempts to provide help. He used substances problematically and attended a Needle and Syringe Exchange programmer. Paul was known to be infected with HIV and Hepatitis C. The chapter recognizes that a single session or brief intervention will not resolve a person difficulties overall, but can act to begin the process of enablement of change and the recognition that positive change can occur.
