Despite the enormous quantity of works relating to proverbs, there have been but few studies of its linguistic status. In this article I have attempted to account for the grammatical, pragmatic and semantic properties of the proverb by proposing to view it as a lexicalised syntactic string which serves as an illocutionary formula in an essentially metalinguistic type of speech act.
