ABSTRACT

Ocean rive-in informal settlement has been in existence for over thirty-two years. The settlement has a long history of social mobilisation, to darker moments when the inkatha freedom party (IFP) leader of the settlement and his family were burnt to death in their shack in 1985. Social mobilisation in Durban takes place within a relatively stable political context as the three tiers of government such as national, provincial and local, which exercise power over the municipality, are led by the African national congress (ANC). Social mobilisation is also shaped at the city scale by Abahlali base Mjondolo (AbM) and to a lesser degree slum dwellers international (SDI). The story of the Rajendra Nagar demolished slum and pusa road eviction case highlight the civil society organisations (CSOs') different spaces of participation on homelessness-related issues. The community forum was also supported by urban human rights activists, progressive urban human rights activists(NGOs) who fought for 'the right to the city'.
