ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the theory of kamma, which is the primary idea that addresses moral responsibility. It also investigates some aspects of kamma-related ethics to find out if they can prove useful in delineating individual responsibility for climate change. Collective actions because global warming, and people place their trust in political institutions and other such bodies representing the collective to make a difference by say passing laws to curb greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Buddhism would have much more to say, for instance, about political leadership, social and economic frameworks, future generations, and other virtues. Contributions can also be sought from later forms of Buddhism, engaged Buddhism and countries where Buddhism is practiced. Humility appears as a central virtue in Buddhism. This is reinforced through fairly recurring instances of the condemnation of arrogance throughout the literature. In general terms, humility presupposes understanding one's limitations, arrogance suggests undue self-importance.
