ABSTRACT
This chapter presents a specific proactive career and college readiness enhancement role for school counselors. The value of a high school diploma has gradually diminished in recent years for a number of reasons, including the emergence of a global economy and the ever-increasing importance of possessing requisite technological skills for employment in the 21st century. Creating a post-secondary education-going culture is a broad goal. Preparing children and adolescents to engage in post-secondary education successfully requires appropriate preparation and a conducive educational environment. The National Office for School Counselor Advocacy (NOSCA) offers few components or goals for career and college readiness counseling. The self-efficacy construct is a component of Bandura's social-cognitive theory. A broader social-cognitive theory component is human agency, that is, 'through cognitive self-regulation, humans can create visualized futures that act on the present; construct, evaluate, and modify alternative courses of action to secure valued outcomes; and override environmental influences'.
