ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explains the nature of young people's health and physical activity experience in relation to family. It explains the spread of governmental technologies into the domain of family life. The book deals directly with the ways digital technologies can be and are used to reach and engage families in surveillance and monitoring of their children's behaviours. It discusses extra-curricular sporting activities and the disparities experienced between families based on their economic capital. It also suggests the voices of young people in care and those regarded as disabled are glaringly missing in most scholarship that examines family engagement in physical activity. The relationship between parents and educators and how each envisage their roles, responsibilities and modes of engagement across home and school contexts is a matter that surfaces.
