ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of book. The current wave of non-state violence arises from diverse causes. It flourishes because of arms proliferation and trade, prospers from the profits of trafficking drugs and people as well as the rewards of extortion, pirating, then crime. This chapter focuses on the relationship between state and capitalism in the contemporary world, taking this critical juncture as the point of departure for the rebirth of the clan and its renovated diffusion. As this social structure is at the base of both organized crime and connivance between state and non-state in diverse forms, it becomes absolutely necessary to examine its constitutive elements and its capability to create a sense of identity and to deliver social goods, and to evaluate the factors behind its reproducibility and expediency.
