ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the lesbian coaches and the homophobia. The topic of sexual orientation within sport in the research literature is an area that has received much attention in the last two decades and within this body of work, the consensus among researchers is that the sporting context is often a homophobic environment for heterosexual and sexual minority groups. The majority of research on sexual minority women in sport focuses on homophobia in sport. Generally speaking, this research demonstrates that homophobia is prevalent in women's sport. Pat Griffin's work about lesbians, homophobia and sport is renowned and groundbreaking. In response to their criticisms of the previous body of knowledge surrounding personal narratives of lesbian athletes and coaches, particularly the work of Griffin, and Riemer, the Iannotta and Kane examines the 'sexual stories' of intercollegiate coaches and the variety of strategies related to the performance of their sexual identity.
