ABSTRACT
Coffee was brought to Colombia in the hope that it would become an export crop. It was planted by sharecroppers in large farms in Santander. In 1855 they exported 2,063,580 kg of green beans (Chalarca and Salazar 1974), signalling the success of the venture and the need to search for other coffee-producing niches as the European demand increased.
