ABSTRACT

This chapter demonstrates Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) that increasingly willing to project power albeit in support of UN-sanctioned and coalition operations as well as disaster relief operations further afield from the immediate environment of Singapore. From Singapore's independence and through the 1970s, the Cold War was an ever-present consideration, manifesting itself in Southeast Asia, first in the form of the Vietnam War and subsequently in the Cambodian conflict that ended in 1989. China has had a problematic status in Singapore policy-makers' sense of history, given that China previously supported the indigenous communist movements in Southeast Asia. The SAF qualifies to undertake the Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA)-inspired transformation, having adopted conventional war fighting doctrines for a very large part of its history. SAF personnel being deployed to support operations other than war (OOTW) missions can acquire OOTW-specific skill sets on the job.
