ABSTRACT

This chapter argues the closer European integration will be needed in the security and defence policy field. It examines the larger trends of military change and transformation in Europe. The chapter discusses the achievements reached far as well as the persisting shortfalls and challenges for the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). It proposes new approaches to more integrated European armed forces. The chapter describes the analysis of the current security environment will highlight the political backdrop against which military change and transformation in Europe is taking place. For Europe, the historic turning point offered the opportunity to continue an integration process that in the West had proved to be the most successful concept for promoting peace in the continent's history. The establishment of common European Armed Forces a recurring subject of political and academic debate may be a way out of the dilemma.
