ABSTRACT

The Republic of Honduras is located in the widest part of Central America. In the 1920s the first women's movements in Honduras started, called 'The Cultural Society for Women' which was directed by Graciela Garcia and other recognized leaders who fought to vindicate Honduran women. January 25th is designated Honduran Women's Day and is celebrated in memory of that historic day in 1955 when a major political conquest was achieved for Honduran women. In Honduras, soccer was the sport practiced all over the country, but it was not generally acceptable for Honduran women to play. In the 1980s changes were generated and the National Basketball League accelerated support for women's basketball. Female basketball teams developed, such as Club Deportivo Motagua, with coach Lety Castro; Club Deportivo Olimpia with the outstanding playing Lafiru Mendoza; and Club Honduras from the School Normal Pedro Nufio. Nationally, the physical education students officiate as judges/referees at the Student Games held in schools throughout the country.
