ABSTRACT

Puerto Rico was one of the earlier Latin American countries to achieve women's right to vote due to the efforts of upper and working-class suffragettes paving the road for equal civil rights for women. The demographics and sociocultural aspects of living in Puerto Rico have been found to disproportionally affect groups by gender. Women in sport in Puerto Rico experience discrimination when trying to move up the ladder albeit as an athlete. Puerto Rico offers a unique example of both shared and different perspectives of sport, culture and politics with the US. As a subject incorporated in the existing law 'Ley Organica' of the Department of Education of Puerto Rico, physical education is a core component of the Educational Public System. Baseball was fuelled in Puerto Rico by the games featuring American soldiers stationed on the island and local Puerto Ricans. Puerto Rico's women's basketball team won the gold medal at the 2011 Pan-American Games for the first time.
