ABSTRACT

Costa Rica is one of the most peaceful and prosperous countries of Latin America. Costa Rican education became a state responsibility in the beginning of the nineteenth century, initially addressed to boys; young men of wealthy families went abroad to study, mainly to Europe. Despite relative invisibility, Costa Rican women have contributed to the country's social, cultural and political history. The reality of gender equity in Costa Rica shows some progress, but also significant challenges especially to eliminate inequalities and gaps between urban and rural regions of the country. Costa Rica has continued to prioritize education and today has a literacy rate of over 95 per cent, over 4,000 schools, compulsory nine years of free education for all from the age of six; the study of physical education begins in the primary school. The women's sports in Costa Rica began in the 1930s with the creation of a team that was iconic of women's sports, Club Sport La Libertad.
