ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to fill the existing knowledge gap by examining how the national cultural characteristics influence Danish expatriates' global orientation, enhance their adaptation capacity, and prepare them for their assignments abroad. Its contribution to the expatriation and global mindset literature is two-fold. The chapter discusses that the theoretical arguments underlying the impact of the home country culture on expatriates' mindset formation and their choice of management styles in foreign affiliates. It argues that managers from low- assertiveness cultures such as Denmark are likely to be less suspicious and more caring for their host country employees and would consider it an obligation to instill these cultural values into their subsidiary organization. The chapter discusses that the impact of subsidiary characteristics on the expatriation strategies of firms by introducing the age and strategic importance of subsidiaries as factors that are likely to contribute to expatriates' choice of management style in the subsidiaries.
