ABSTRACT

This chapter examines China's national green innovation strategy, particularly as relates to the development of two of its leading clean energy technology sectors: the wind and solar power industries. It also examines China's national energy sector trends during the 12th and 13th Five-Year Plan (FYP) periods, including the drivers of China's national energy policy strategy, and the role of different energy sources and sectors driving energy consumption. It then turns to an examination of the increasingly important role that clean energy is playing in China's domestic energy innovation agenda in recent years, including key research and development (R&D) programmes and institutions involved in promoting innovation in the sector. The chapter evaluates the factors that led to the successful development of China's wind and solar power sectors, reviews the trade and intellectual property tensions that its clean energy dominance has created. It discusses the outlook for continued green energy innovation, including potential challenges and opportunities China faces in the coming years.
