ABSTRACT
Answering the question ‘What’, relating and describing the facts, is no science. One must also seek an answer to ‘Why’. Adam Smith answers the question: ‘Why promises are kept?’ Shame, that is, the fear of losing face, make us to keep our promises. If we do not do that, we dare no longer look society in the face but imagine ourselves as rejected and thrown out from the affections of all mankind.5
