ABSTRACT

Academic scandals and student-athlete misconduct have plagued college sports for centuries. In September 2007, Florida State University's president, Thomas Kent 'TK'. Wetherell, a former Seminoles football player in the mid-1960s, sent a letter to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) reporting the initial details of an academic scandal within the university's athletics department. When the academic misconduct scandal was initially reported to the NCAA, news organizations filed a lawsuit to make the records public. The NCAA stated that the academic misconduct case involved impermissible benefits, unethical conduct by three former academic support services staff members, and a failure to monitor by the university. Abuses in college sports, such as academic misconduct among student-athletes, are not new. Abuses in college sports have led many to question the appropriateness of intercollegiate athletics within higher education institutions, as the goals and functions of each do not always align.
