ABSTRACT
Eastern Illinois University (EIU) officials have said that the school treated concussions in accordance with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Sports Medicine Handbook, which offered no specific direction about how long an athlete should be benched. The NCAA is a self-governing institution that commissions concussion research. It is exceedingly difficult to sympathize with the NCAA, especially in light of certain powerful members' casual attitude toward the absence of concussion management implementation. The coach's position of power had dominated and silenced Angela Palacios's physiological health. One way of accounting for the overexploitation of student-athletes' mental, emotional, and physiological health is the tragedy of the commons, an economic theory that argues that most people who are trying to find a way to avoid the evils of a common problem want to do so without relinquishing any of the privileges they currently enjoy.
