ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the events at Penn State as a case study that can serve as a thought-provoking learning tool for higher education and student affairs professionals, particularly those involved with athletic departments. The case is then positioned within its sociocultural context, and an alternate administrative response that could have potentially addressed the situation is offered. The chapter describes the six brief biographical sketches of Jerry Sandusky, Graham Spanier, Joe Paterno, Mike McQueary, Tim Curley, and Gary Schultz that offer critical information relevant to the case. It focuses on the details of the Grand Jury report, the resulting fallout, and the findings of the Freeh report. The chapter explains summaries of four critical accounts that occurred in 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001, contained in the Grand Jury report. The Grand Jury report documents, in graphic detail, claims of sexual abuse from eight alleged victims against Jerry Sandusky that occurred between 1994 and 2009.
