ABSTRACT

In 2012, Baylor University was on top of the world. The once quiet, academically focused Baptist campus in Waco, Texas, found it had hit the trifecta in college sports. Baylor University was a much different place prior to 2003. A classic bottom feeder in the perennially powerful Big 12 Conference since its entry in 1996, the University underwent a renaissance guided by an ambitious and visionary president, Robert Sloan. Athletic departments also demonstrate precious little interest in engaging parents of student-athletes, other than to be sure they have tickets to the game and know where the team is staying. The tragedy that occurred at Baylor University in 2003 clearly does not define the college today. The athletic success that its high-profile teams have enjoyed in such near proximity to this devastating scandal is nothing short of remarkable.
