ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we survey the literature concerning adolescent siblings and within-family variation to open the conversation about the direct and indirect effects of family systems, parenting practices, and sibling dynamics within families. The nature of the family unit as a whole, the meaning of various subsystems, and their associated influences are ultimately highly informative in our comprehension of adolescent sibling relations. We offer a succinct overview of a within-family unit study, but refer to in-depth explication of relevant statistical techniques in Chapter 6 on methodology in sibling study.
