ABSTRACT

Soccer, known in Ghana as football, is the most popular sporting activity, both locally and internationally. Introduced to Ghana (Gold Coast) at the latter part of the nineteenth century, football was one of the leisure sports of the European merchants and colonial administrators. However, in 1903, Mr Briton, a Jamaican-born Briton and Head Teacher of the Philip Quaicoe Government Boys School in Cape Coast, introduced the game to his pupils. This led to the formation of the first football club in Ghana. This club was known as Excelsior. Since its inception, first as a leisure-time game and second as an academic (school) sporting activity, football has developed into a comprehensive and structured national game, with various national teams and a national governing body, the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
