ABSTRACT
If communication is about sending messages between a giver and
a receiver, then costumes are a means of communication. The
wearer sends an intended message depending on what they are
wearing. People choose what to wear based on the image they
wish to portray, the activity in which they are involved, how they
feel, or even whom they think they may meet. A piece of advice
handed down for generations of daughters is to wear lipstick
every time they leave the house; after all, you do not know whom
you might run into. The lipstick represents a well put-together
and attractive woman. While this is an outdated notion, a specific
message was apparent to others. Similarly, if someone is dressing
for work, then work-appropriate clothing is important. This
could be as easy as a prescribed uniform, or a need to
function within the position, or a means to exude confidence
and professionalism. Any of the options speak towards the
appropriateness of the situation. In each case, the clothing sends
a message about the person’s occupation and attitude toward
themselves and the image they wish to portray.
