ABSTRACT

This chapter makes a modest contribution by focusing on the role of rising powers in contemporary efforts to link trade and development. The chapter concentrates on the two largest rising powers, China and India, while also analyzing the BRICS grouping as a generator of ideas. It considers the worldview of the rising powers in this regard. The chapter then looks in detail at one very important, if challenging, global initiative to reinforce the developmental impact of trade; the WTO's global Aid for Trade (AFT) initiative. The Millennium Declaration and the MDGs were significant milestones in the evolution of global development policy. The Declaration was a formal collective commitment by the political leadership of the planet, in particular, of the developed world to the developing. Finally, it studies the rising powers influence on the trade-related dimensions of the UN-led proposals for Post-2015 global development objectives.
