ABSTRACT

This chapter traces the rise of Indonesian nationalism and considers its contemporary manifestations, arguing that as Indonesia becomes more powerful economically, a more assertive nationalism is likely with implications for the diverse nation’s minorities and regional relations. Below we examine three main phases in post-Second World War Indonesian nationalism: (1) anti-imperialism under Sukarno, (2) anti-communism under Suharto and, (3) democratization, Islam, and globalization.
