ABSTRACT

This chapter describes practical aspects of researching the subjective phenomena of workplace abuse, incivility and bullying. Workplace abuse, incivility and bullying (WAIB) are sensitive topics which can be considered to be part of the dark side of organisational research. WAIB research has been undertaken in a wide range of industries, and with myriad approaches. In order to gather data for research into WAIB, researchers must first negotiate a pathway to those whose experience they need to understand. This means persuading gatekeepers and individuals to open up and share information about a subject that creates emotional responses which can range from denial and defensiveness to despair and depression. The process of gaining access is based on the development of trust. Trust is based on clear communication, good planning and the integrity of the behaviour of the researcher. Participants' trust in the research process is often based on the assurances of confidentiality. Gatekeeper approval is likely to be based on similar assurances.
