ABSTRACT

This chapter describes workplace abuse in the Czech Republic, a country undergoing significant transformation. The Czech Republic belongs to a cluster of post-communist countries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) whose development, was hindered by four decades of authoritative communist regime under the influence of the Soviet Union. The chapter discusses, this communist past has had a detrimental impact on the country's work environment and work-related values and practices. It presents a brief historical profile of the country, highlighting the ways in which the current work environment in the Czech Republic has shaped by the confluence, common to post-communist countries, of the communist legacy with the recent shift towards neoliberalism. It also presents current workplace abuse research in the Czech Republic and, at the same time, draws attention to how workplace abuse has discursively constructed in public debates. It concludes with the practical implications for organisations in the Czech Republic.
