ABSTRACT
Teams are the foundation on which medical knowledge, skills and attitudes are executed to perform healthcare tasks. Effective teamwork is therefore essential to provide safe, high-quality care. Knowledge of team processes is important for healthcare managers to provide structures that enable teams to function effectively. This chapter provides an overview of Teamwork concepts in the management literature. It also discusses the specific challenges that teams in healthcare organizations face, especially in acute care. The chapter introduces the concept of Teamwork as a dynamic phenomenon consisting of episodes, phases and Teamwork processes (action, transition, interpersonal and learning processes). It also highlights the specifics of healthcare organizations (HCOs) with respect to the importance of Teamwork and learning as a special team process. Finally, the chapter provides recommendation to improve Teamwork in HCOs and describes how existing theoretical models need to be adapted to fit the needs of teams in HCOs.
