ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the major roots of the challenges in reward management and performance appraisal in the shipping industry and proposes some possible remedies. The internationalization of the workforce training market raise challenges that demand innovative managerial approaches for crew recruitment, training, retention, performance appraisal, and reward management. The shipping companies use the system for purposes such as hiring their workforce, wage and awards allocation, career planning, training and competency development, and improving performance of their employees. Most developed countries support the maritime industry by adopting policies that attract and encourage women to choose a seafaring career. In developed countries, employment contracts and promotions are structured in an explicit way to prevent discrimination against female seafarers. The salary fluctuates with the overall demand and supply of seafarers in the international labour market. The Maritime Labour Convention set the responsibilities of recruitment agencies for issues related to working hours, health and safety, crew accommodation, and catering standards.
