ABSTRACT

Environment continuously changes and sometimes the rate of change is so rapid that it could adversely affect individuals' health. Employees who work in such an environment are obviously under great physical and mental pressure, which can affect health status and quality of life. An effective work health safety program can monitor the health and wellbeing for seafarers. Bullying and harassment are two characteristics of discrimination, which could potentially affect seafarers' health. Such unacceptable behaviour may come from colleagues or managers, and are known causes of ill health. Piracy at sea is a thorny issue that is of key concern for seafarers, their families, and the international maritime community. Seafaring is an occupation that has always been associated with high risks and therefore, stress and fatigue are two main causes of leaving the seafaring profession. Minimizing these two obvious health issues have a positive impact on seafarer retention.
