ABSTRACT

Developing university lifelong learning (ULLL) cannot be separated from the question: ‘what is a university’? Throughout history, different concepts have inspired a fundamental rethinking of the purpose of universities and the roles they should play in society, from the idea of producing the next generation of scholars to the ‘entrepreneurial university’, the ‘engaged university’ and the ‘lifelong learning university’, just to name a few. Indeed, in some cases we can envisage at least the possibility of the ‘distributed university’ and the ‘flexible university’.
